poke pinpricks in the air above magical nest edges of
moss, lichens and spiderwebs
a tiny nest basket
woven and fastened
firmly on a thin branch
over a deep ditch
hidden in heavy foliage.
Strength and elegance in the smallest of creatures.
"The woods hold not such another gem
as the nest of the hummingbird.
The finding of one is an event."
~ John Burroughs, naturalist
Wow, What a find! Where was this nest?
ReplyDeleteBehind the cabin a group of us were staying in. Because it was over what appeared to be over a ditch, it was at eye level. One of the more sharp eyed of us knew what it was.
ReplyDeleteThe cabin was at Hornby Island up Vancouver Island where we go every year.
DeleteIt is very beautiful up there at Hornby Island, and this kind of observation just makes it more special. Lovely photo.
