A Demand for Security

She stood up, brushed the sand off her skirt and walked resolutely toward the security officer standing at the entrance to the beach area. The entrance was merely the end of the sidewalk with a small opening in the fence surrounding the private beach area. Prudence held down her wide brimmed straw sunhat with her free hand.  Don, the security officer, dull-eyed and red-faced  his dark blue uniform not comfortable in the thirty degree heat held a sweating can of Pepsi to his forehead, rolling it back and forth slowly.

‘Officer’ ‘Officer!’

The amply endowed woman called out to him.  “Officer, I am going for a swim and would like you to watch my things so those young thugs over there don’t desecrate any of them. You can’t be too careful these days.”

The ‘officer’ straightened up, and in his mind, rolled his eyes. He set the cold beverage on the tree stump beside him.

“Well, ma’am, I do see your concern. I’ve had my eyes on those ‘young thugs’ all morning. However, I must tell you I can’t watch your things and the young men at the same time. I do think it would be better for you, and your well being, if I focus on the young men and their highjinks.”

Prudence sighed and simpered at him.

“Well all right then - but don’t you let them near this end of the beach.”

She turned on her heel and stalked away.

“There is no such thing as perfect security only varying levels of insecurity.”
