Ode to Friendship

In the warmth of a welcoming home, rest comes easily
allowed to whisper in
wrapped in a cosy blanket
perspectives shifting softly
sharp edges of reality eased
with laughter, silliness and deep thought.

“When friendships are real, they are not glass threads
or frost work, but the solidest things we can know.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson, Essays: First Series

Early Morning Traveler

The city’s breath was even and slow ~ only the hum of wires woven through trees lighting the early few citizens arising,
occasional taxis rolling silently by in the early, early morning still dark outside pools of light from streetlights, there were still stars to be seen sprinkled around the moon
cutting a crescent in the soft black sky.
roll and bump of my suitcase wheels
along the sidewalk dented the almost silence.
this beginning to my weekend away
started softly with a long day stretching ahead,
eager to visit with a good friend,
nursing classmates and instructors for our
annual RGH Alumnae gathering
a pause in my Victoria life
to reflect, regain perspective and rest.

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.”

Seeds

E
ssential goodness finds truth.
Seeds planted in early morning soil, hoping for good weather and abundant harvest shared throughout humanity

As days grow long, truth’s perspectives flicker in the brightness of many days, bow to the setting of the sun, breathe softly in moonrise and star shine ~ resting in the darkness of a moonless night.

Essential goodness grows in the cool dark
reaches up to the moisture of cloudy skies
strengthens in the snow-covered mountains and plains
grows dormant and waits for morning.

“There is no greatness where there is not simplicity, goodness and truth.”
~ Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

Architecture

V
ision

marries intuition and facts
when a hunch blossoms into an idea blue-pencils into sketches with perspective and meaning
aiming steadily for the sky
while reality reels out in front
in bricks, mortar and steel.

“If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down.”
~ Toni Morrison

Construction Site

I
ntuition interferes with the facts

facts interfere with intuition
with a constant bump and grind
’til the dance winds down,
flashing lights grow and glow steady,
a spot of light midst gut and mind
illuminates the perspective.

you will be at the beginning of what you should sense.”

Need to Know - or Not

Taking sides from a distance is easy
when the 8 x 10 glossies
with sprinkles of sound bytes
air-brush magnificent landscapes or workscapes
begging us to take a side
building our arguments
through uninformed emotional goggles
without knowing enough details
until taking sides divides and conquers
leaving us without perspective and shaking our heads.

“Everything has two sides - the outside that is ridiculous,
and the inside that is solemn.”
~ Olive Schreiner, South African writer

Until

Context is everything in any war of words full of emotion
forgetting the facts
colouring the details with
bright flashes, bold stripes
until all that is left in the air is the ‘who is right’ question
until compromise is reached
until the bitter taste of ‘agreeing to disagree’ thuds to the floor
until perspective shows
that no one person is one hundred percent right for everyone
and no one person is one hundred percent wrong for everyone

“Sometimes one can be so closely involved
with things that the larger context is lost to view.”
~ Brian Ferneyhough, musician
