Saturday Afternoon on Broadway

I left the Royal theatre yesterday with a tear in my eye. With a group of friends, gifted by one of our members, we attended Broadway Lights. It was an energetic performance by the Victoria Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Jackson. Brian Jackson gave us the lovely bits of history I so enjoy for the selections performed, both for the symphonic pieces and those that accompanied the dance. Students from the Canadian College of the Performing Arts (CCPA) tapped and sang compositions from 42nd Street and Puttin’ on the Ritz in Act One. In Act Two they provided us with two powerful presentations. The first from the Broadway play Ragtime, and the second the suite from Les Misérables. Having not seen Les Misérables, I relied on the comments of two of my companions. ‘That performance was better than many of the professional ones I’ve seen’! Each one of the over fifty dancers brought their dreams to life on stage. Their costuming was excellent from tops hats and tails, to flowing gowns and to the poverty of Paris life in Les Mis. Choreography was beautifully designed and executed.
