Chapter Two, Episode Ninety-Three - Worlds Apart - Situationally Theirs

Worlds Apart

“Good morning, Miss!” It had been quiet at the Estate for quite sometime. Cook was concerned, but didn’t feel it was in her place to say anything. She could hear Miss Em moving around upstairs. The dumbwaiter chains rattled every morning with requests for meals or to say she wouldn’t be in until after supper. At days end, the dumbwaiter chains would rattle again and dishes emptied of food were delivered. When she asked Martha or Digby, they didn’t seem to know anything more. Digby always let Martha answer for him. She had seen him go upstairs once or twice after his phone rang. “Can I get you anything, Miss Em? I hope you are well.”

“Yes, I’m fine Cook. Thank you for all your good meals this past many days.” Emelina poured herself coffee and sat at the table.” Elbows on the table, coffee in both hands, she stared into space. She had spent most of her days with her husband ~ when he was off shift. Otherwise, she did his laundry, cleaned his apartment, walked in the city, went shopping for things she didn’t need and sat in the park staring. There were no answers, only one question. Where is Dez? She hadn’t heard from her since she left the Estate for a job interview. She saw lights come on in her duplex morning and night. Her car was gone every day before Emelina left for the city. She just didn’t know why.

Dez missed the camaraderie. She didn’t even talk to Samuel. But she had job. She laughed. A  receptionist at a large local spa! The Cosmopolitan Spa. After walking away from the interview, already with orientation papers in hand, she went to the mall for new clothes. Mentally pawing through her closet all she could see was one decent dress outfit. The rest were jeans and t-shirts. And they weren’t in the healthiest shape. The job was three days a week, with more relief possible. Dez sighed. She could finally pay her way, even if she had to get her nails done and have a proper hair style. In the last ten days, or it could have been more, she subjected herself to the ministrations of the spa. Part of her ‘orientation’ was to have each of the treatments that clients would experience. She barely recognized herself! Otherwise it was just the phone systems, the therapists (that was almost laughable - therapists?), the music rotation, and of course, a tour of the facility. Oh, and she had to make sure the laundry was done! She would be glad to get out in the orchard. Picking out three new pair of slacks - two black and one gray; some colourful pullover tops which could be mistaken for t-shirts. Once home, she polished her best and most comfortable shoes. Sudden realization reminded her she hadn’t contacted her sister for over a week. She’d been so busy. Up and out early every day, then studying the different treatments at night kept her occupied. She realized she needed to talk with Emelina.
