Some Cats Are Like That

Late 1980's

Cats need more attention.

No cats that I have known agree.

Miss Kitty, using my son as a pillow,

would not have found attention necessary.

Welcome, but unnecessary.

Some cat’s are like that ~ stand offish and aloof

until it’s time for them to insist on attention.

My cat, Jet, just walks across my laptop

leaving a row of unrelated letters in my work.

I’m to figure out what he was spelling and.

can usually figure it out. I respond; he settles.

While not as emotionally demonstrative

as dogs, cats do have a quiet way of

inserting themselves into our lives.

So I bow to all the feline companions

I’ve had over the years. Quiet companions,

until it’s time to be pragmatic and eat.

“If animals could speak the dog would be

a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat

would have the rare grace of

never saying a word too much.”

Tangled

All life that flows from

everyone and everything;

seems loose and

with out anchor.

Yet their roots

bound to each other

beneath

the ground of experience.

“Roots are not in landscape or a country,

or a people, they are inside you.”

Today

Today is always a mystery

Plans that I have, routines that are

~ well, routine ~

get shifted unceremoniously with

a phone call,

an email that needs answering,

or the sun calls me out to play.

Because I reside in each moment,

to ignore these mysteries would be rude.

Or perhaps, like today, the mystery was

Why has this day been so unwrinkled?

There was a time ~ maybe yesterday ~

when, if my rigid rhythm had gone awry,

I would have been annoyed.

Today, I allow the mystery to wrap around me.

Each Memory

Slipping through photos

each memory reaches out

to that part of my heart

where joy and love resides.

More than One Legend

The great buffal sculpture

at the head of the Scarth St. Mall ~ I pass by this majestic

part of Regina history

and read the legends of

One Prairie Storm (Sort of)

Rain threatened

And then it poured

Thunder pretended

And then clouds packed up

Then it was over….

Didn’t bother the pelicans one bit!

“If you think it’s going to rain, it will.”

Released

Unlocking a lock

sealed by necessity or

the conventions of time

is difficult.

Some would say ‘impossible!

so why bother’.

Others would say

‘it will just happen;

give it time’.

Well what is ‘it’?

Not sure there is a label.

A feeling not entered in

a list of emotions.

The Feeling?

An open window

A light breeze

A lightness inside

The lock was

imagined ~

but real until

breath was more important.

“Sometimes,” the Wise Man observed, “to need is…..to let go.”
