"It's A Hot One, Dear"

"It's a hot one, dear. Not a cloud in the sky.” He was a grizzled old guy in faded jeans and a sloppy shirt already sitting waiting for the #7 Downtown. He glanced up at the sky then down the street and fell silent.

The thick glass walls of the bus stop shelter provided little protection from the slanting evening sun. The normally cool soft feel to Island air had evaporated. Trees held still, thin branches languidly fluttering in errant breezes. Even the cars seemed slowed in the early evening, save for the sporty black convertible that raced down the hot pavement. Shadows grew long, cooling the asphalt. My memories of Texas heat shimmered comfortably. While hot weather for some is distressing or dangerous, for me it is so very welcome. And I do have faith that whatever the weather, it is only temporary. Today I am grateful for this summer heat.

“And then, one fairy night, May became June.”
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
