Review: BALLET ROCKS ~ Ballet Victoria

Toss away any preconceived notions you may have about ballet and about rock music. Now, if you can, imagine the choreography of beautiful ballet married to rolling rock music. Then throw in the amazing costume design of bright summer dresses over crinolines of the jive era, almost burlesque designs reminiscent of the movies, red flowing costuming for Latin dance and slim leotards for softer ballet. A single solo tap performance to a favourite crooner, Frank Sinatra was an added surprise to nail down this diversity in dance. The music of Roy Orbison, The Kinks, Queen, and the Police and more. Added to this mix, musicians, led by Tal Bachman, gave us live energetic rock music accompanying the dancers in very graceful and, in the same breath, dynamic performances. It does sound as though it could be a real mess doesn’t it? Fortunately for the packed house at the McPherson Theatre here in Victoria on yesterday’s lovely Sunday afternoon, the simplicity of set designs, balanced lighting and creative planning sorted it all into a fascinating and fun afternoon at the theatre.

“Most people think of ballet as children in little tutus.
They don’t know it is sweat, blood and tears as well!”
~ Nan Keating, former member of the American Ballet Theatre
