Summer Sounds a Theme Song

“Lemona-ade for sale!
Fifty cents a cu--up”
“Lemona-ade for sale!
Fifty cents a cu--up”

Above all the noon time sounds of traffic, bird song and crow calls, passersby deep in conversation, and rat-tat-tat on roof tops,
a young strong voice sang out to any and all within earshot.
Just across the tree lined city street,
in the beige stucco house on the corner
a young girl, in pink shirt and ponytailed sun blonde hair,
sat on the square stone fence swinging her legs, picking at weeds and singing out for customers.
A sale table with a cold jug of pink lemonade and clear plastic cups ready for sale.
Just home with groceries, there was money still wanting to be spent in my purse.
Her summer song singing won my heart and my change ~
50 cents for the lemonade and a tip for her song.

“In summer, the song sings itself.”
~ William Carlos Williams
