Kintsugi

It’s never the whole story

The real one ~ that no one

hears or feels. The heart

grows cracks that are filled

with gold. As years pass,

  some tarnish,

    some grow scars and

for some the gold still shines.

Body memories tell the truth,

releasing them when it is time.

“Your wound and healing are a part of your history,

a part of who you are.”

~ Bryant McGill

When We Stroll

Holding sway over our minds

are the stories we tell ourselves

early in the morning or

late at night. It may be at the

grocers or the bank.

Stories of

better than or

not good enough

but when we’re strolling

in the shade of an old elm tree,

or by water lapping the shore

we can hear our own truth.

That time when the noise

of the world is merely a fiction;

when just a flock of sparrows,

a breath of wind and brilliant sunlight

hold sway over our minds.

“In the end you don’t so much find yourself

as you find someone who knows who you are.”

~ Robert Brault

Nothing is Impossible

Tests have a way of drawing a line

with a black marker that seems

indelible. That F that you got in

a high school English class,

the lab values that suggest some

kind of health condition, the

drivers test that you flunked because

you didn’t know the speed limits.

Tests don’t say whether you are able to

learn the how’s and wherefores of life. A special teacher may believe in you; your parents may believe in you;

your friends may believe in you ~

those who knew you, long before

you believed in yourself. The tether

between hearts plays out while your belief

grows stronger, never completely

letting go. When your belief falters, that

tether is a life line to the truth of your worth.

“If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse; however if I treat you

as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that,”

~ Johannn Wolfgang Von Goethe

Faint Echoes

Up-ending what we

have for what might

be, shakes the ground

But if we don’t search

farther for the truth of life,

we’ll forever sit at the kitchen

table with the beverage of

our choice telling ourselves

stories of what could have

been. Hope, an echo, grows

faint unless we balance

‘could have been’ with

our dreams, giving them

a place to live and breath.

“If I cease searching, then, woe is me, I am lost. That is how

I look at it ~ keep going, keep going come what may.”

~ Vincent van Gogh

The Truth about Risk

Risk taken, risks not taken

make up the continuum of life

rather like hills and valleys

that wander through the land.

Well, maybe not the prairies,

but a journey nevertheless.

Some were called brave, or courageous, with an image of

a warrior on horseback,

or a soldier in battle

or maybe the person of

questionable intelligence

skydiving or bungee jumping.

No, the risks I’m talking about

are not for the camera or

the headlines of a newspaper.

Risks like being brave enough

to say ‘no’, to stand up for yourself,

to go against the grain,

to act on belief alone.

“No risk is too great to prevent the necessary job from getting done.”

~ Chuck Yeager

Something More

Taking leave of

the conventions of

snow covered

asphalt streets and

cement sidewalks,

the snow sculpted

ice cream and

marshmallows from

glistening snow. Once

barren trees and hedges

were transformed into

magic land of something more.

“Snow was falling, so much like stars filling the dark trees that one could easily imagine its reason for being was
nothing more than prettiness,”
~ Mary Oliver
