Nightfall

Words nestle

in the palm of my hand to mean nothing and everything

at day’s end

when a sickle moon

rides high.

sleep settles

her blanket over all

dismissing words and worries

keeping hopes and dreams

beneath my pillow

'til morning comes.

I Had to do Something!

I’m a collector of potato water, kept in the freezer. There's leafy green celery ends in the fridge, an onion that’s been taking up space on the cupboard, one lonely piece of bacon and three large mushrooms. Put those together with 3 bay leaves, salt and the few black peppercorns available. Put the lid on and let them bubble and simmer for a few hours.

The other ingredients:(added to the broth just before storing)

~ 1/2 bag of frozen mixed vegetables

~ 1/2 bag of frozen broccoli cuts

~ boredom and little stamina.

This resting and recovering is hard work!

In a Moment

Kindness ~

as easy as a breath,

as simple as a smile

graces any life

in a moment.

One random act of kindness at a time.”

Space Dust

Dust of the universe, we humans are, with lives full of

meaning from the vantage of our homes; feet up on a stool

perhaps jogging down the sidewalk, or dancing like a

child, where our universe is

home with families and friends

        and, for some,

as many tissues as there are stars.

“We are nothing but space dust,

trying to find its way back to the stars.”

~ David Jones, Love and Space Dust

Welcome Relief

This is the best kind of relief.

To breath deeply of cool, fresh air.

To walk slowly on forgotten summer

sidewalks laminated with snow,

savouring each step. Pausing to raise

my eyes to see through arching

barren branches to the crystal blue sky.

This is the best kind of relief.

“This is the best kind of love, I thought,

without recompense, without gifts,

or unkind words, without suspicion,

or silence on the telephone.”

~  Billy Collins, Aimless Love

Troubled

Out of order troubles me.

I’ve been troubled for

the last three days.

Trapped inside, not by

snow or cold but by

some virus or germ

that slipped into my system

without knocking. A semblance

of order survived, but much has

slipped from my grasp until l

am left staring at the flickering

flames of my fireplace wondering

if I’ll ever be healthy again.

Poor me.

This temporary setback,

merely a setback, allows

a regroup and recovery

when others watch wildfires

consume their homes and lives.

To restore order to my small space

between rest and meals is a privilege.

Seasonal Rotation

The sun came ‘round today,

certain it was just for me,

I called out ‘You’re back!’

grateful for its happy smile.

of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring”

~ George Santayana
