Out of the Dailiness

Entertainment for us comes in all forms

~ a walk in the park on a gentle evening

to flickering characters on a screen,

time travel between the covers of a book

the slap and cheer of hockey or soccer

fingers caressing the octaves of a piano,

or the swirl and twirl of a waltz……

Each of them directing us

out of the dailiness of life

and into joy, release and fun.

“Once a person has all the things they need to live,

everything else is entertainment.”

Saturday Night

9 p.m.

Saturday night

Felt like a going out night

    when I was much younger

Feels like a movie night

     then and now

Feels like a staying home night

to read, to watch a movie, to be home.

“Saturday night is perfect for writers, because other people have ‘plans’.”

Weekend Balance

My plate is full with lunch
out Saturday, this afternoon a
movie that made me laugh

and warmed my heart;
a local political forum that
cheered me this evening.
The walk home in the cool

night air finished this weekend like whipped cream with a cherry on top.

The 96th Oscar Awards

Oscar night. My evening has been pleasantly occupied by this sparkling show of creativity. It’s glittering night for an over the top celebration of this years movie, the movie stars. When we are watching a movie, we only see the final cuts for the screen. Polished and edited. The Oscars that are awarded to those behind the scene, hard working people are equally, if not more important, because they design and build, they create fantastic make up and elaborate costumes, they skillfully shoot the scenes, edit the scenes, skillfully use state of the art technology to create the stories that we see on any movie screen. I salute them all for their hard work. Unfortunately, the pay equity leaves a lot to be desired!

So much has been said over the years about the host, the Oscars themselves, the glitz and I’m sure there is truth to back up the complaints. Besides those judgments, I am so very pleased to see the casts and crews honoured for a job well done.

if not more work behind the scenes and they’re the last people

you would ever be unkind to so I hope I’m not a diva off stage.”

That’s it, That's all!

From July, 2016 ~
Has nothing to do with my entry!

Successful trials……..

~ I’ve done it to myself again

Nothing

Nada

Zip and Zilch!

When it comes to successful trials, tonight my brain only thinks of Raymond Burr in the Perry Mason books and TV series. They ran from 1957 all the way to 2020 in many tv venues. He always had successful trials with the help of Paul Drake, private investigator and faithful secretary Della Street.

Then there’s the movie Twelve Angry Men - Broadcast originally as a TV play in 1954, it became a 1957 movie set in the jury room where the jurors make a decision in a homicide trial. One of the men finally convinced them all to bring in a not guilt verdict. There have been several remakes since that time.

That’s it folks!

Qualities of A Sunday

On the ferry home to Victoria tonight
Sunday has a certain special quality that requires regular maintenance. For each of us they will be different. But here are a few that we dedicated ourselves to this Sunday: (‘We’ being Jason and I - Corette took the morning off in gentle repose and Jeff had activities involving hair to cut and a squash tournament to be played.)
  1. Up early to enjoy the day
  2. Stay in pj’s
  3. Watch a movie (today - Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark)
  4. Out to breakfast with friends - Dim sum at the Pink Pearl Chinese Restaurant in Vancouver
  5. Another movie - (this afternoon - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom)
In between that very laborious schedule of activities, Jason made cabbage rolls some of which came home with me tonight.  It would have been a great beach day, but there was not enough time between our breakfast and my bus time for my return to Victoria. Nourishment has been my theme this month, and I do believe my shared activities have absolutely fit the bill!

Cheese and Groceries

Saturday cartoons have been the only thing missing from today. An in-depth discussion with my son this morning, identified this lack so the replacement was the movie Thor: Ragnarok. Super heroes and super villains in intergalactic battles. Marvellous special effects played out in space and time with just the right amount of cheesiness. But enough of a movie review.

Once we were all up and moving, the three of us, Jason, Corette and me (mom) set off for the Trout Lake Farmers Market - grand dogs, Eva and Percy, remained at home supervised by grand kitty, Purdy. A chance meeting with friends put a lovely shimmer on the outing. The Farmer’s Market was full of kids, grandparents, parents with strollers and friends shopping for the freshness of the fields, orchards and gardens come to town. As well as produce, there were sausages, meats, fresh farm eggs, milk and cheeses from surrounding dairies and farms. The aroma of fresh baked breads, sparkling jars of honey’s and jams were bookended by stunning pottery and beautifully finished wooden bowls. Of course, there was lemonade to be purchased, our three year old friend clearly reminded us. Two bags of produce, cheese and bread found their way home with us.

This afternoon has been dedicated to visiting and cooking, eating and visiting with no specific plans for how the rest of the day will play out. Maybe out for supper or another cheesy movie at home - maybe both. Who knows? What ever it is, the only guidelines will be nourishment of mind, body and soul - fun and silliness required ingredients.

It is lovely to be silly at the right moment.”

My Bright Spot

When I’m preparing to write my blog post, I look back over my day for a moment of clarity. A bright spot. A new awareness. What has made me feel good in my day. While I’m recalling the events of my day, I don’t forget to feel sorry for myself. It’s too easy to dive into the sadness, or anger or maybe just plain frustration. And then I'm reminded……….

My bright spot today? Being so very proud of my son Jason. An essential member of the team of artists that won a Daytime Emmy award, at the end of April, for their incredible work in R.L.Stine’s Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls on Netflix. Jason would be the first to remind me that he is part of a team. ‘This honour is shared, ma’.

I will confess I have not watched this movie, but it doesn’t diminish my pride. Jason has accepted any challenges that his chosen career has handed him. And I’m just proud and pleased to be his mom.

p.s. Will be checking out Netflix this weekend!
