Awakening

Not awake yet

shuffling through

the sludge of sleep,

walking and talking

until

movement shook me

gently awake

dregs of sleep drifting

like the heat of the day

settling into the trees

as the sun slips

   down and down

to the horizon

   painting the land in

deep yellows and golds.

With the soft breath

  of a cooling wind,

I walk on.

“Rise up nimbly and go on your strange journey.”

~ Rumi

Only My Inner Child

All I saw was glorious clouds

reflected in shades of peach

from the setting sun

shredded banks,

long strips

or little puffs

I had to stop, lift my eyes and

breathe deeply of the soft evening.

Where was even one other child

to share in that magnificent sight?

“We teach children how to measure and how to weigh.

We fail to teach them how to revere, how to ease wonder and awe.”

~ Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, author, lecturer

Simply Beautiful

Amid tall grasses,

sunset glancing over

its stalwart beauty ~

at rest when there was

still work to be done.

A Cool Evening

April snow dripping, dribbling into

     pools of water from

trees etched in black at sunset

and with the first faint scent of spring, I remember life exists.”

At Sunset ~1

Lost in the trees

at sunset ~

the peaceful dark

is blessed by gilded

purple-blue and mauve.

 where other people see nothing.”

In the Setting Sun

Pitted terracotta rust

shades a spike in

an old dried timber

in the setting sun.

Or

Is it an old cowboy

leaning back against

a fallen fence post

in the setting sun?

A Sunset Mind

lit only by the setting sun

clouded and sleepy imagination

is put to bed for another day.

“Our imagination flies - - we are its shadow on the earth.”

Only Seconds Away

Over the horizon there is

a land only seconds away

in memory ~

home that was and

now is sunset’s glow.

“The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change,”

Photo-ops

I stopped in my tracks ~

The sun ~

angling for photo-ops ~

settled to the horizon and

let golden paths ribbon and spread through leafless trees

to play second fiddle to its glory.

“Call for the grandest of all earthly spectacles, what is that?

It is the sun going to his rest.”

~ Thomas de Quincey

Sunset 2

My path curved

past the frozen lake

my breath came sharply

in the winter chill.

everyday can end beautifully.”

Back Lit

Sunset’s glow

gilds barren trees ~

back lighting for
