Time Change - 1

There is no time to change in this busy work-a-day world

or does change occur over time whether the world’s at work or not?

When the will to be more than what’s in the past becomes the theme of each day change will occur as each moment ticks by on the clock.

“To exist is to change, to change is to mature,
to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.”
~ Henri Bergson

Money Well Spent

There needs to be a theme to spending money!

A focus, a reason, some rhyme.

There’s food for the table
that’s under my roof
that shelters body and soul.

The problem is that the theme that I choose is not necessarily aligned with the stores!

So I make out a list and set out with a goal
to purchase only what is needed this eve.

For today there’s success, my needs were quite small
and my lunch for tomorrow is made.

“There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire
everybody in the company from the chairman on down,
simply by spending his money somewhere else.”

Theme Search

Finding a theme to call my own among ~

political correctness and opinion
research with cohorts and conclusion
spiritual vs secular solutions

~ can be like ~
finding a needle in a very large hay stack

until

one life, one outcome, one family, one friend
shows me that
for a life to be lived
an outcome to become a stepping stone
one family to be honoured
one friend to be supported

the theme to call my own is
bundled in practiced nursing expertise
called withdrawal management
and passed on others still to learn - or relearn -
this most basic form of nursing care.

“The most important practical lesson than can be
given to nurses is to teach them what to observe.”
~ Florence Nightingale

Summer Sounds a Theme Song

“Lemona-ade for sale!
Fifty cents a cu--up”
“Lemona-ade for sale!
Fifty cents a cu--up”

Above all the noon time sounds of traffic, bird song and crow calls, passersby deep in conversation, and rat-tat-tat on roof tops,
a young strong voice sang out to any and all within earshot.
Just across the tree lined city street,
in the beige stucco house on the corner
a young girl, in pink shirt and ponytailed sun blonde hair,
sat on the square stone fence swinging her legs, picking at weeds and singing out for customers.
A sale table with a cold jug of pink lemonade and clear plastic cups ready for sale.
Just home with groceries, there was money still wanting to be spent in my purse.
Her summer song singing won my heart and my change ~
50 cents for the lemonade and a tip for her song.

“In summer, the song sings itself.”

Summer Book Review -The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

This Tuesday’s theme would ordinarily be a singular book review. But! The Book group I belong to has stopped meeting for the summer. Does that mean I’ve stopped reading?  Not a chance. I will give you a brief review of the book I chose for this upcoming year. The Shadow of the Wind  by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It is a mystery of the highest order, accompanied by characters so real and tangible that they come with you through the pages as whispers of their story swirl around the moment. The rest of this review will not come until next year when I host the Book group in my home.

What else have I been reading this summer?  My own writing, rather academic in nature and from the past several years, which is, in itself, still in the shadows of construction. And to support that hard thinking activity -  Chapter by Chapter by Heather Sellers. More ‘how to’ reading for one who is not giving up her day job. This nurse wants and needs to learn the craft of writing to share my beliefs and a story or two in the pages of a book.

“Books can be dangerous. The best ones should
be labeled “This could change your life.”

Exploration

Divining a theme throws down the gauntlet for
exploration of vast landscapes, seascapes or the star filled sky
moving into ever deeper terrain
only the perimeters travelled and familiar.
Poking down roads with no sure signage,
flying into eternal darkness with only belief and moral compass guiding the trajectory through facts and figures,
light and dark,
story and tradition,
watching how the wordscape or image
nuanced, shaped and multicoloured, expands
raising questions yet to be answered
off shooting parallel themes
steady eye and hand seeking balance and perspective.

“Come to the book as you would come to an unexplored land.
Come without a map. Explore it and draw your own map.’
~ Stephen King, Hearts in Atlantis

Re-setting Theme

There’s a theme to early morning
before traffic begins to hum
chittered and chirped by robins and wrens
when there’s no hint of the day to come.

‘Get up and come to the window
then come outside for a walk...
Start your day with birds and trees
before starting to work on the clock

Should the stuff of the day be rough and noisy
walk again in the evening light
relax in the glow as the sunset ~
and re-set the theme for the day.

“You have peace,” the old woman said, “when you make it with yourself.”
~ Mitch Albom,  The Five People You Meet in Heaven
