Home Safely

Trusting each driver ahead,

the night black, greyed by

clouds of blowing snow

blotting out all but

our headlights and

red flashing tail lights

of vehicles leading the way

past the white centre line

invisible or ghost like,

we crept cautiously through

this April winter night.

A Cautionary Tale

Opening doors we didn’t know……

  could be opened ~

done with caution,

  expectations tempered ~

is a risk

  and a challenge

at any age

  keeps us engaged

with the life

  we have been given.

Cabbage Rolls!

Every big idea is made better with food. The idea this weekend is, for many, a family gathering on this Thanksgiving. My challenge? Bring cabbage rolls, a dish I have made maybe once, on my own, in the last forty years. I approached this….this intimating challenge cautiously. But dammit! I would make them and do a good job! From cookbooks and YouTube videos, I researched what was needed. Purchased the groceries needed. Cleared my kitchen. Gathered my tools and ingredients. And then, something interesting happened. I slipped into ‘the zone’ as I cooked brown rice, chopped onions and garlic, parsley and celery, measured out dill weed and smoked paprika and made tomato sauce. Over a dozen cabbage rolls later, tucked in and covered with bacon, they went into the oven for a two hour bake. I did reserve one small piece of filling and cooked a tiny meatloaf to taste the finished product. The flavours are quite good - but I’ll wait till tomorrow to get more objective opinions.

Mirage ~ 2

The human body carries
the mysteries of soul into
life and living with little complaint

no hesitation about

     where we go

        how we get there ~

except ~

when true age is forgotten ~

vanishing as though a mere mirage ~ appearing magically with creaks, groans, and stiffness ~

still willing to keep moving…..

cautiously and grateful for

time to rest ~ waiting for

the magic of mirage to return.

Walk On

R
isky, rocky terrain begs to be walked on ~ a dare tossed randomly by Mother Earth.

Hidden pools of cold water      shelter thick purple starfish but threaten injury to intrepid humans. A dare answered with caution can be a risk worth taking.

Raising the Bar

The COVID bar is raised ~

edging higher while

our smiling faces peer

cautiously through

anxious fences of community.

On An Afternoon Walk - Cautiously Unmasked

It’s been like an invisible brick wall ~

all the masks and distancing

But emerging from it all

brave businesses open up

Most patrons still masked ~

on the street, masks tucked away

Like a deep breath of fresh air

the city is cautiously unmasked.

Out of Order

Out of Order

“Gallantly offering his hand, Lord Guillam assisted Lady Veronica from her velvet lined carriage….....
Out of order! This should have been from the blog post written on March 8! Instead, I quite blithely went to a movie, wrote and posted for my blog a movie review of the period piece Emma. I completely forgot the ‘G’ from CHALLENGES leaving, quite insensitively, poor Lord Guillam and Lady Veronica in the limbo of 'The Cloud'. Oh well, they’ll just have to wait for some other time. There are more important things to write about today than Lords and Ladies.

An interesting interaction I had today. I was unable and unwilling to shake hands with a new acquaintance. How rude is that!? However, with COVID19 invading not only the world but our personal spaces, habits of a life time developed over generations have been sorely challenged. Leaning my head on my hand when reading, holding my two fingers over my mouth when listening intently, wiping my eyes....the list goes on. So I set about developing a list for hand shake alternatives (research over the internet and maybe a bit of my own imagination
  1. Fist bumps ~ they’ve been around a long time. But what if the bumper or the bumper hasn’t washed their hands front and back!
  2. Elbow taps ~ that kind of looks like some kind of a square dance move?
  3. Toe or foot touches ~ puts me in other a vulnerable position. My balance isn’t all that great anyway, so if the other party’s balance is off - or they’re just feeling mischievous - I could be headed for the pavement, sidewalk, tile………whatever is underfoot.
  4. Hand to the heart ~ looks a bit patriotic to me. The message may be lost
  5. A single wave of the hand ~ now that could make one look quite regal. I’ve been trying to perfect that royal wave for years.
Lost to our human connections are beautiful hugs and welcoming handshakes. Yes, we do need to be very cautious in this really scary time, but don’t let the scare create a further loss of human connection in this chaotic, crazy old world.

Included is a photo I’ve taken of the memo at the Walk-in Clinic I go to here in Victoria, British Columbia.

Keep well everyone!

Weather Challenges at Christmas

This was the post I attempted to do yesterday ~ quite unsuccessfully, I might add.

'I blame it on the west coast weather systems! I’m unable to get a good signal in on my laptop here in RAINY Vancouver. Christmas in Sask may also be challenged if the snow doesn’t let up on the Coquihalla. So for right now, as I write this I have a grand-kitty snuggled by my side, curtains closed against the rain while my son is off at work. All precautions will be taken before we set out for Sask. on whatever day we leave for our first stop. Will be giving those expecting us a heads up whenever we leave. This post has been done on my iPhone.
Be careful out there!'

Today as I write this, it's still snowing on the Coquihalla but should rain later in the day. Our trip will probably start tomorrow if all goes well. Hesitating before setting out is always wise!
