How Could I Not

May 30, 2024

How could I not get up and out

after all it’s not 30 below,

I have a beautiful pink umbrella

and a green rain jacket

but that may not be necessary

because snow is falling ~

melting before it hits the ground

sifting thro' waving green leaves

flat grey skies hover over the evening.

How could I not get up and out?!

Grey Clouded Air

December 2022

Imagination blown

by the wild wind

on this April snow day

is as light as the flakes that do

their forced dance and race

through grey clouded air.

Were this December,

the reality would be welcomed.

Today, if I forget

the date on the calendar,

I can see the beauty and

welcome the crisp cold air

on my face

pulling my woolen collar

up to my chin,

wrapping my arms

around myself in a warming hug.

A single tiny bird

ignores snow and wind

to flit from tree to tree

before flying away.

“Snow in April is abominable, like a slap

in the face when you expected a kiss.”

~ L.M.Montgomery, Anne of Ingleside (1939)

Snow Fall

As if to convince us that

it was still winter,

the snow fell lightly,

a steady east wind brushing

it through the air. The beauty

of a gentle winter day. But

most of us are smart enough

to know that after today,

it’s time for winter to take

its frosty flakes and go home.

Just not today.

I hope

“…..winter is an exercise in waiting ~ for relief, for a bird to sing,

for the first purple crocus to push up through the snow”

~ Michelle Obama, Becoming

*Authors note: At the risk of repeating myself, this is the third year in a row that I have used this March snow fall picture. I’m still acclimating myself from my years away in locations when March is spring time!

Maybe Both

We are alive in

so many different ways

whether walking down

a snow covered sidewalk

the trees still winter black

lined with snow

or visiting with friends in

a buzzing coffee shop telling

each other tales of books,

or recent events

or the latest fashions.

Passersby and neighbours

live their lives while

taking a walk along the frozen lake

or driving from here to there

There is no must be

   or should be

only what we each believe

~ maybe a belief in

stern, no smiling,

one foot in front of the other,

or it may be a belief

in the joy of being alive.

Maybe both?

or tortuous as the heart. Bitter. Sweet. Alive.”

Relief on a Spring Day

Glistening ice on

curbs and sidewalks

crumbling snow against

curbs…..and sidewalks

drains hidden beneath ice pack

Winter Imagining

Come with me as I walk

in the midnight of winter

with snow falling gently

all around, edging head

and shoulders in flakes

of crystal. Beware the

ice-y flows beneath the

soft layer of new snow.

Stand beneath a streetlight

and watch as the drift and

sway of dancing snow

partners with cold wind in

this delicate dance. When

noses are red and cheeks

pink aglow we turn our walk

into the warmth of home.

“Summer is the time for squabbles. In winter, we must

protect one another, keep each other warm, share our strengths.”

~ George R.R. Martin, ~ Game Of Thrones

To Grip or not to Grip

A winter of dangerous ice

hidden under greying or fresh snow,

oddly shaped lumps or

sheets worthy of a skating rink.

walks or strolls outside

not wise until yesterday.

Heavy rubber bands slip

over my boots & hold my feet.

little black dots in the centre

of the yellow dots ~ tungsten stems

to grip the ice & keep me upright

on such paths of slippery danger.

you see very little and everything happens really quick.”

~ Steve Yzerman, retired hockey player

Night Watch

Darkness has fallen,

Snow, bandied about

by the wind, has settled.

Christmas lights in

windows and over doors

vie with tall streetlights.

Music softens the evening.

Day’s work complete. The

night watch is for dreams.

“I love the silent hour of night,

For blissful dreams may then arise,”
