This Little Muse

A fragment of thought

fluttered into the light,

lit on my finger,

rested long enough

to pen this little muse.

Fluttering away into

the cool night air,

I could only wish it well.

How High

Ambition to live the life

we were given

put on the wayside

when confronted with style,

images and must do’s.

If we do not measure up

then we chance to

forget our own courage

and desire for independence.

Independence of thought,

 of action

    of belief

in life as we see it.

And so we climb

into that suit of armour

that fits us best and

take the direction of our choice

despite pitfalls that may be in our path.

“We never know how high we are

Till we are called rise;

And then, if we are true to plan,

 Our statures touch the skies.”

~ Emily Dickinson, Aspiration

with my vision in mind.

pressure to be done on time and perfectly ~

kicked to the curb!

chunking each project,

finish one section at a time to

open my play time for creativity and shopping.

It Felt Good

There are days when everything clicks along from the time eyes open, this wasn’t one of them. It was deceitful. Eyes opened, morning moved along to breakfast and then it was time for a nap…..a long one. When I thought about it, the last several days had been busy. Keeping me on my toes whether I wanted to or not. It happens to everyone. How many know when to stop and just breathe - or take a nap. Listen to body and mind. Many of us have an old message on repeat play that says ‘You’re lazy’ or ‘Get the work done and quickly!’ Even if it’s the weekend or retired. So changing the message becomes the challenge. Giving permission for time for some ‘me time’ and then taking it. Our futures just may depend on it!

“When you rest, you catch your breath

and it holds you up, like water wings….”

~ Anne Lamott

p.s. After I had rested, I finished the laundry……and some other things on my to do list.

Rest Stops?

Out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a red squirrel perched on a branch thick as my arm.

From a corner of her mind,

the wisp of a thought

curled along synapses

behind her eyes.

The squirrel knows when to pause.

Do our minds know that tactic?

Are they merely rest stops for ideas?

Toddler Troubles

Toddler Troubles

Never, never, never, never!!!!!!!  She stamped her little feet and then plopped down on the cold wet tiles of the patio. Her mother had called her to come in to put away toys she left strewn all over the living room. Stella did not want to come in the house. It was summer! She had her brand new bathing suit on. It was her favourite colour. Turquoise with a beautiful white unicorn rearing up to the sky. If she went in, her mother would make her take it off! She’d been playing, happy as the little birds on the fence, in the squishy pink and purple wading pool in their postage stamp back yard.

If she could have formed a coherent thought at the time, she would have said quite calmly that she was not done playing outside yet. She would be in shortly. Her toys were very patient, unlike her mothers quite irrational demands. They did not want to be shut up in the toy box.

But Stella was only four and only had the insight of a four year old. And a very limited vocabulary.

patience you have,

for instance.

Overthinking

Which leaf?

Which branch?

Maybe a twig?

Theory of Energetics

Energy is not always available

vanishing secretly

when running in the wind

Energy is not always available

still sleeping

when morning light opens my eyes

Energy is not always available

drained away

after a good day’s work is done

Energy is always available

for a thought

for an idea

for a smile

“The energy of the mind is the essence of life.”

~ Aristotle, The Philosophy of Aristotle

Over the Kitchen Table

Taking my time
for thought
   before speech,
for breath
   gentling words,
carefully shares our time
   over the kitchen table.

Echoes ~ 4

The end of my Progress
theme for this month and
I simply move on, with little
fuss or bother, to October.

A frightening thought is ~
a screeching end to Progress
as we know it, dictated by
the raging winds of climate change.

“You cannot get through a single day without having
an impact on the world around you. What you do makes
a difference, and you have to decide
what kind of difference you want to make.”
~ Jane Goodall

“Humanity is now standing at a crossroads. We must now decide
which path we want to take. How do we want the future
living conditions for all living species to be like?”
~ Greta Thunberg

Floated

Once more

The blank screen stares

Unblinking and white

Waiting
for an idea

A meaningful thought

A charming metaphor

Anything - even this wandering

Journaling floated it all away

Breakfast calls much louder.

“The wonderful thing about writing is
that there is always a blank page waiting.
The terrifying thing about writing is
that there is always a blank page waiting.”
~ J.K.Rowling

BeCalming

Mind full like chittering, chattering monkeys leaping branch to branch, swinging in wide arcs playing across space and time

Mindfulness
calms chitter-chatter accepts distraction without shame or annoyance, settles swirling eddies of thought to focus on the moment.

“Let go of your mind and then be mindful. Close your ears and listen.”
~ Rumi, Love’s Ripening: Rumi on the Heart’s Journey

An Ideal Definition

Idiosyncratic flashes of brilliance
Dynamic belief in thought
Effervescent dreams of growth
Astute observations of the margins
Scientific bits and pieces
