An Old White Fan

An old white fan sits

swinging back and forth

to cool the room.

I do have a.c. but

love my little fan that

merely stirs the air

stagnant and stuffy with

summer heat. Its soft shush

as its breeze drifts across

the room is comforting.

How can something so simple

be so comforting?

It is one of those sounds

that has the same softness

as homemade bread,

a quilt made by a friend

or a tea kettle on the boil.

It’s just an old white fan.

“The air is all softness.”

Storm: Refreshed

Thin morning clouds

hovered and grew

Thunder muttered

Rain spattered then

poured in sheets

Fragments of blue sky

peered through ~

gone in an instant

air fragrant with moisture

Evening clouds

ride high and spent.

“I love the smell right after a storm.”

Storm Warnings

Over the wires

Balcony cleared

    ~~~
Clouds gather
Yellow sky
Air smells of rain
   ~~~

Energy tightens

My body thrills

A Morning Hymn

I like Sundays.

In old memories.

attitudes shifted for

that Sunday moment.

A feeling of more

air to breathe.

I’ve not been

in a church

for many years,

but the silence is

a morning hymn.

I like Sundays.

“In the midst of the storm, your life boat appears. A psalm,

a hymn, a word…calming the fiercest winds of the soul.”

~ Roderick l. Evans, author

Then it is Time

Relax and breathe ~

  when your heart is crying,

  when the world is too heavy,

  when the wind is too wild

~ it seems impossible.

It is the only solution

  when we know that

  we are no bigger

  than the air in our lungs

~ then it is time to

breathe deeply and relax.

“Your breath is your best friend.”

Philosopher and teacher

Winter

When the sky is so blue

    it hurts your eyes

When the air is so cold

    it burns your breath

When the snow fills the lace

    of the trees

When the sun is so bright

    it blinds you

It is winter.

“Nothing burns like the cold.”

~ George R.R. Martin,  A Game of Thrones

Bejewelled

Air muggy and thick

 Roses bejewelled with

shining raindrops

We all fall, and we all land somewhere.”

Keeping a Promise

I had to talk myself into

going for a walk tonight.

Not because it was evening,

but because it had been raining.

Grey skies and rain are not the

best companions for a walk.

But the rain had stopped.

I’d only be out for a short walk.

I had promised myself……..

the air was soft and cool,

the rain merely a mist

so fine it was invisible,

only made real by its

gentle caress on my cheeks,

and dark spatter on grey cement

Hints of new growth on bushes

and greening grass was a gift.

“Sometimes people don’t understand the promises

they’re making when they make them.”

~ John Green, The Fault in our Stars

Snow Dust

Sparkle and crunch ~

scrape and fling

snow dust dances

on the night air

Sparkle and crunch ~

scrape and fling

snow dust settles

into winter-bare trees

Sparkle and crunch ~

scrape and fling

snow dust cleared ~

’til the next fall of snow

“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be

an unnecessary freezing of water.”

~ Carl Reiner

Simplicity

Air seems clearer when

sunshine releases

ice from shore

Air seems clearer when

a simple thank you

is sufficient.

“Gratitude bestows reverence…changing forever

how we experience life and the world.”
