Bright Ideas

Options tested for

  here and there,

    why and why not,

  for maybe and for sure

take up too much space

in a muddled head,

while ordinary tasks

get done. People say

‘you think too much’

and maybe so but I want

the goshawks and sparrows,

  the robins and meadow larks

to know that their beauty is

part of life that lifts

‘too much thinking’ to the skies of

    possibility for each tomorrow.

Childish Delight

Outsized ideas are full

of words and images,

tangled together,

a myriad of balloons

released into the morning air.

To pick one thread, one string;

to catch the most important one

can seem, at first, impossible.

Not to the scientists who see

the possibilities.

They each take hold of

any string and begin.

Chapter Two, Episode 116 - Out of the Blue - Situationally Theirs

Out of the Blue

“My, my! Elizabeth will be very pleased.” Digby had come early to his office at the back of the kitchen. Even the coffee machine had a high polish on it. The water reservoir and the coffee bean receptacle were both filled. Clean mugs set out. Spoon container filled with clean spoons. All that was left was to choose a mug and push the right buttons. Not a dirty dish in sight. Clean table cloth on. Elizabeth always left the kitchen just as spotless, but on the few occasions when someone else was tasked for cleanup, it was never as good. He wondered if the excellent work was just Miss Emelina and Dez, or if the men had helped. Sure he’d learn those details from his wife, he just smiled.

On the way in, he picked up the mail and planned to open it when he got to his office. “Coffee first.” Martha was still asleep, so he just slipped out of the house quietly. It wasn’t really a work day for him, so he was dressed casually. For Digby, casually meant he didn’t have a tie on and a suit jacket was replaced by a ‘Mr. Rogers’ cardigan. Martha had been teasing him about that for years. Once at this desk, he set his mug of hot coffee and the mail down. Settling in to his chair he leafed through the mail. A power bill, a letter from the Estate lawyer, two requests for donations and ….. he set them all aside. The last was a letter from his brother Tom! He hadn’t heard from him since he and Martha had visited them in the summer.

Hello James!

You know I’m not much of a letter writer any more, but I’ve just come in from clearing snow. More than there was last year. Purchased a pretty heavy duty snow blower that can clear a side walk a lot faster than the old one I had. But it still takes a lot of work and shakes my arms half off my body. Been watching the news and heard the reports of the snows you’ve had. Probably all gone by now with the rain.

Sofia and I have taken up this new sport ‘Pickle Ball’. Do you have it on the Island? Strangest name for a sport I ever heard of, but we have fun. The town has a community building with a gymnasium where they set up the nets. It’s kind of like tennis, ping pong and squash all combined. Sure beats clearing the snow. After our games, the group always goes for hamburgers. There’s the usual cranks that want to run the place, but we just let them be with their worries.

That’s about it for us. Drop me a line when you have time and maybe we can get together again this summer. Say hello to everyone at the Estate ~ we enjoyed meeting everyone.

Hope you and Martha are well. Sofia and I enjoyed your visit this summer.

Love Tom

Digby read the letter over again. On his desk, he kept the photograph of the snowy forest that James had sent him. Out loud he said to Tom’s letter “Yes, Martha and I do need to make another trip up, but in the snows this time. Not sure that’s a good idea. I’ll have to talk it over with her.” He heard footsteps at his door. “What do you need to talk to me about?” Surprised, his wife must have been up practically after he left for the office.

“Martha, I’ve had a letter from Tom. Mostly it’s about snow blowing and Pickle Ball. That sport you want me to get involved in. He wants us to come visit again. He said this summer, but what do you think about a winter trip?” Seeing a frown pass across her face, he hesitated. “Well maybe not, but could we think about it?”

“We can think about it, James, but isn’t travel in the mountains in winter dangerous? We’re Island people and if anything happened….  We’d have to buy new winter clothes and boots… How would we get there safely?” Martha was already planning and worrying at the same time. “Well, let’s just discuss it and I’ll call Tom tonight and see what month is usually the best for travel.”

“Breakfast’s ready, you two.” Martha had already spoken with Elizabeth about their lack of breakfast before leaving for work. She hadn’t eaten either. Almost speechless about the polish that had her kitchen shining, she almost hesitated to get cooking. “Just scrambled eggs, toast and tomatoes.” Martha finished setting the table. The three friends sat down and over the simple breakfast, James told Elizabeth of Tom’s letter, Martha filling in possible travel plans while they ate. After the excitement of Christmas had calmed down, it felt good to look forward to this new possibility.

Focus!

Eyeing the possibilities around me this last two years has challenged me. Returning to Regina after living away for over thirty years has taxed my heart, brain and body. The prairies of Saskatchewan, my home for longer than I was away, never left my soul. When I left, I drove my own car, had a nursing career and several goals. Encountering life’s unexpected twists and turns along the way, I was away far longer than my original idea. And that’s all it was ~ an idea ~ without much of a plan at all.

Returning to the prairies without a car and retired, my goal was to be closer to family. Rebuilding those relationships stretched by time and distance is an ongoing and very precious challenge. This brings me to possibility. There have been bleak days - kind of like the winter we just passed through! But there have been more days with tiny hints of possibility. Like two brand new great granddaughters! Like learning to snowshoe at 74! Bus passes and taxis. Learning independence in this broad, spread out city. Enjoying life as it arrives each morning when I awaken.

All the while, I have wanted and needed more, but didn’t know what or how to get it ~ whatever ‘it’ has been. Possibilities as scattered as clouds across the broad blue prairie sky. Asking the question ‘What if?’, wondering if it made good sense, taking a lot of deep breaths and many steps forward, I have eyed each possibility and chosen one………to be continued……

we would literally astound ourselves.”

Book Review: The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth

I love a good puzzle and a murder mystery usually fits that bill. This murder mystery was indeed a puzzle, but not especially satisfying for this reader. Diana, the mother-in-law and Lucy, the daughter-in-law, the two main characters, did not like each other from their very first meeting. Preconceived notions and expectation of their roles prevented them from softening and understanding one another. Diana, a wealthy and privileged woman in a solid marriage. Lucy, was young and just engaged to Diana’s eldest child, Oliver (Ollie). Set within the bounds of a family and all their secrets, the clearest character development was for Diana and for Lucy. Character development could have been improved for other family members, however this lack did not distract from the story. There were several possibilities of who the murderer was, however, I was wrong on all counts, giving me a surprise at the end.

The Mother-In-Law was a relatively easy read with short chapters. As the story moved forward, the previous lives of Diana and of Lucy were revealed, suggesting how their present behaviour was related to their past experience. Some areas of the story were not to my liking. The first was the formatting of the book. For this reader, there was too much back and forth - from Lucy and then Diana; and from past to present. Although the chapters had clear headings indicating which character was speaking and which time period they were in, I found this too distracting for my taste. In book group discussion last evening, there were those that liked that format. As far as the final chapter, the ending was not satisfactory as there was no clear indication of what the final police report said.

Hidden - Chapter 5

Hidden - Chapter 5

Ethan was sure that he could convince Evan to at least look at the two young women. Worried that they would turn out to be floozies, Evan was always hesitant. ‘They only look nice, Ethan!’ Ethan, on the other hand, never worried about such details. Not until he had at least met a girl who ‘looked nice’.  He just wanted Evan to get out for something other than their own outings. Maybe if they went out on a double date? Evan might just loosen up a bit ~ if only he wouldn't start going on about the best pianos or his favourite piano artists. He and Evan had gone to venues when, occasionally, headliners were in town. Mostly, it was regional artists that played in cramped jazz clubs for avid audiences. Watching the two very lovely young women, still very girlish, Ethan decided that the possibilities seemed endless.

Hidden - Chapter 1

Hidden - Chapter 1

Pearl knew that it would be impossible. She was so ordinary compared to just about anyone else. Even her expensive clothes were bland and too ‘suitish’. Looking in the mirror didn’t help. Her forever curly mop would not be tamed. Every morning her ordinariness chastised her. Approaching either Evan or Ethan seemed hopeless and just a school girl dream. What would either of them see in her? Evan riffed on the piano just like Jerry Lee Lewis. Ethan was just gorgeous and always well dressed. Pearl was meeting her best friend Charlotta for lunch that afternoon. Together they would make their plans for this Valentine’s Day. Neither of them could face one more Valentine’s Day alone.

Kitchen Possibilities

Coming into the kitchen I could see possibilities. They were well hidden but I knew they were there. How many times have any of us spent time opening cupboards, the refrigerator, kitchen drawers with a blank stare? What’s there? “I’m just cooking for me. I guess it doesn’t matter what’s there. But the refrigerator is kind of empty. I’m hungry but there’s nothing interesting there.” Or “It’s just the two of us ~ maybe we could try a new restaurant ~ but we’ve already used up our eating out budget for the month.”

Now, I love preparing food, cooking food, serving food but I have often been stuck in an old entrenched ‘meat and potatoes with a vegetable’ cuisine that had little imagination and, consequently, often little taste. My mom always used fresh or frozen peas from our garden, but going to other kid’s homes I sometimes was served peas from a can - rather gray and unappetizing. Also as a youngster, I learned to cook but usually had mom or any one of my sisters to guide me and tell me the next step. Consequently I didn’t have to use my imagination much and I’m not certain it was encouraged.

No matter. That was a very long time ago as I am now in my seventh decade of learning. In relation to the kitchen, I am still learning to trust myself. To be brave in the face of spices and flavourings. And ok if it is just me, but when cooking for others I freeze. Afraid that what I prepare and serve will be too much or too little. There are so many real food issues, food fads and food warnings floating about like too much oil on top of the goodness below that it is easier ~ and blander ~ to play it safe.

I got curious about what I have ~ not what I don’t have in my kitchen ~ while watching TV being a couch potato. Food shows. I love them. Guy’s Grocery Games. Chef’s Table. Chopped - especially with kids competing with one another. How has it made me curious about the contents of my own refrigerator and cupboards? Contestants or experienced chefs have been challenged by game show requirements or by life experience, while growing into experienced chefs. They have all been challenged to work with what they have, purchasing as few ingredients as possible, and to create a delicious meal or dessert. (Dessert is not one of my strong suits.)

I would be much remiss if I didn’t give kudos to my friends and family who have traveled the globe and brought home their taste experiences as well as the rest of their journey. I have eaten many dinners made with their memories of Morocco or Asia. I have learned to be curious about the spicing and preparation of foods from several different areas of the world. I have dabbled in some of those cuisines, but am still much of a novice as they do not spring to mind when wondering what to cook for lunch or dinner.

I have created some not very good meals and some really delicious meals. Fortunately, the not very good meals have been just for me ~ unless my guests were being too polite to say otherwise. But even the not very good meals have been turned into soups with the addition of a little homemade chicken broth and different spicing. Now coming into my kitchen I do see possibilities much more easily. My kitchen is my place to play with my food. Doing dishes is the only down side to this tasty result of chasing my curiosity.

(p.s. - baking bread is my personal favourite - focaccia, whole wheat bread, naan bread, No Knead bread, scones, banana bread……..)

“The more you know, the more you can create.
There’s no end to imagination in the kitchen.”

Moving Forward ~1

Archaeology is a such big word.
Finding twenty and thirty year old official papers - a big job.
Fearsome potholes have been encountered!
Packages of photographs (and a tiny note from a very tiny niece, Daisy)
Letters from patients
Notes from colleagues from my Texas days
Reams and reams of writing about addictions nursing
Didn’t poke through any of it despite itchy fingers
From it all I’ve found two…
only two…..pieces of officialdom with possibility
I am grateful though as the dates are close!
More searching tomorrow
Something with dates more accurate.

A Very Creative Plan

    A Very Creative Plan

Joel sat on the front step of Grandfather’s porch exactly two days after Christmas. He was wondering. What was he wondering about? He was wondering about his new friends and how he could bring them back all the way across the country just in his new red backpack, with his new sketch pad and his new brightly coloured pencils and his pyjamas and ….and…. and…his forehead wrinkled. He turned his cap to the back and then to the front, hunched his jacket up close.

If he asked his mother she would say - "Now Joel, you know that’s impossible.” Then she would go back to washing the dishes and sweeping the floor.

If he asked his father, he would say - “Well, buddy, you just remember them but you can’t bring them with you.” Then he would go back to reading the morning newspaper.

If he told his Grandfather, he didn’t really know sure for what he would say. He knew that his Grandfather would sit back in his rocking chair, pull out his pipe and after puffing on it two times - exactly two times, his grandfather would probably say “We’ll have to think about that.” But what his grandfather did say was “Well, have you thought about putting them in that new sketch pad of yours?”

“But, Grandfather, I only sketch stuff I see all the time like my silver bike or the blue birdhouse by the mailbox.”

“Well, Joel,”  his Grandfather said after exactly two puffs on his pipe “You could ask each of them to lie down on a page and you could sketch around him or her to get their shapes.”

“Oh. …But, Grandfather, Mr. Little is a giant and he is way bigger than a little piece of paper.”

After exactly two puffs on his pipe, Grandfather said - “Didn’t you tell me all your new friends are magic?”

Joel nodded exactly two times.

“Well then, ask Mr. Little to if he can make himself just as big as the page just long enough for you sketch him in his favourite colour. Then draw in his eyes and nose and all his clothes after he gets up. If that works for Mr. Little, you can try the same with Vanessa and with the faeries.”

“Hmm” said Joel after tapping the end of his nose exactly two times. “But then, I’ll just take pictures back, not my friends.”

And so Grandfather took exactly two more puffs on his pipe, rocked forward in his rocking chair and said. “Joel, my dear boy, when they lie down on the pages of your sketch book, they will leave some of their magic behind for you. Your sketches will be their shapes and their colours and with their magic you’ll have your friends with you at home”.

Joel jumped up from the step, turned his cap to the front, and gave his grandfather exactly two great big hugs. He ran into his grandfather’s house for his sketch pad and his brightly coloured pencils. Joel’s friends, Mr. Little the Giant and Vanessa, the Purple Dragon had listened as Grandfather explained their very creative plan to young Joel. Mr. Little was in his rocking chair as tall as Grandfather’s house. Vanessa, the Purple Dragon rested quietly in the gigantic pine tree in front of the house, her leathery wings folded gently behind her. The faeries had a hard time staying still. They wanted to fly around, chittering with the winter robins and lovely brown wrens. They finally settled themselves on Mr. Little’s broad shoulders dusted with snow and on Vanessa’s wide forehead, her eyelashes glittering with frost. Grandfather took exactly two puffs on his pipe and said to his guests  - “Please be careful with Joel's new things” looking pointedly at the faeries. “You have decided which of you will be first? It is a lovely day isn’t it when you can be with the people that love you.” Grandfather smiled, knocked the ashes out of his pipe exactly two times, leaned back and rocked himself to sleep, his Christmas quilt pulled up to his chin.

Trapped ~1

Trapped

Inside
My body yearns
To stretch
To step away
To feel the warmth of the sun on my face

Outside
My mind yearns
To see past barriers
Of windows, of doors
To smell new mown grass
My soul yearns
To be free from hard lines
Invisible black lines drawn through life
To feel the beat of my heart

My hands and my feet
Dependable and strong
Carry me forward
My eyes and ears
Reliable and acute
See and hear possibilities
Accept the challenge to break free
Listening to the yearnings of body, mind and soul.

“But you, children of space, you restless in rest,
you shall not be trapped nor tamed.”
~ Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
