Winter White and Sky Blue

Winter white and sky blue,

pencil gray trees and fences

complete a scene that grow

into grass and leafy trees;

fields of grain crisp into

autumn gold and bales of hay.

There is no greater resilience,

unless it is the way mankind

grows and learns in waves

from the passing of centuries.

“Life is a series of waves to be embraced and overcome.”

New Life

Hot air breathes new life

into a bland lump of

sourdough, aroma defining

the spirit of bread.

“The most satisfying product of culture is bread.”

Solitude ~ 3

Solitude sounds are soft,

 masked only by the

  noise in our minds.

“The atmosphere defines the environment of sound.”

Help

A rock in the sun!

Eager to find answers

to the many questions

posed over the last few

weeks:

What’s happening?

   When will it happen?

     What will happen?

And the biggest question of all: WHY? ~

It set my head spinning,

my heart bursting with

fear of the unknown.

I have a remarkable imagination

when it comes to the unknown.

The worst will always happen and

mostly to……Everyone!!……

Deep breath, my eagerness became

finding untroubled waters ~ or in

the case of this prairie winter ~

pristine white waves of snow.

In the cold clear air, fear of the unknown vanished

It did help to stop doom scrolling news reports………

“It is the still, small voice that the soul heeds,

not the deafening blasts of doom.”

~ William Dean Howells, author

That’s Life!

Committed to life is

not an easy thing

if you think about it.

We are each handed

life at the moment of conception;

   no handbook,

     no road map just:

here you are wherever here is,

floating about in a watery bliss.

No knowledge of

  flowers or trees,

    sun or shade,

the push and pull of society.

Expected to grasp at life, or not.

The first of many choices that

will be tossed our way. Sometimes

too quickly to warrant decent consideration.

But we go on,

with little success or a lot,

but committed to a singular goal.

Which may be

what’s for dinner,

or shall we see a movie tonight,

or perhaps climb the social ladder.

On the best days it will be

to wake up and smell the coffee,

or walk a cobbled path lined with flowers,

       help someone cross the street.

Oh yes, commitment to life is

not an easy thing, but can be

  filled joy,

    fun and

as many good things as there unpleasant.

That’s life.

No Nonsense

No nonsense was the wind,

biting, scratching, pushing me

toward home.

But there are times

when I just have to stop.

Stop,

gloves off and stuffed under

my padded armpit,

fumbling with my cellphone

while the ice wind tries

to throw it into its big bully game.

There was merely a shadow

on the great snow bank,

but the sun!

It had thrown shadows across

snow banks everywhere

and who knows?

They’d be gone at sunset,

never to appear again

just at that moment when I walked.

It is always that moment,

the moment of awe and beauty

that a transfixes my heart.

And so I too am no nonsense,

standing firm to that freezing foe at my back.

“Nonsense and beauty have close connections.”

~ E.M.Forster, English novelist,

(1879 ~ 1970)
