Clarissa's Love

Eager for them to begin playing, Clarissa closed her eyes and held her breath.

The first time she’d been to a symphony was when she was 5 years old. She remembered it like it was yesterday. A Christmas Symphony. The music was magical. There were Christmas carols she knew from church and classical music; in her teen years, music from the movies. As a 5 year old, she didn’t know the names of the pieces of music but it didn’t matter. She went on with her young life, begging her parents every year to take her to the Symphony. In high school she joined the marching band, learning to play the trombone and finally learning those names of the music she loved. After school she took violin lessons. Her goal was to be a member of a symphony orchestra and play the Christmas music she had heard as a child. Whether it was in the brass section or the string section, it didn’t matter. She only knew she wanted to be part of that wonderful music. Now in her 80’s, arthritis crippling her hands, she could no longer play, but there was nothing wrong with her hearing.

When the music rose in one grand layered melody from the orchestra, she opened her eyes and breathed in the magnificence that she loved.

On an Evening Walk - Softened

Cool evening air
embroidered with blossoms,
the songs of blackbirds,

the sight of soaring geese,

and the whisper of the wind ~

a muted symphony to soften mind, heart and soul.

And whenever you feel afraid, know you can ask your fear about itself.”

In Between

The space between

chaos and order is a space

for a breath and a rest.

Like the space between

notes of a symphony or

the words of story or song,

creativity blossoms once more

in the silence of this magical space.

“Silence leads us back to our purpose, and it ignites creativity and vision.”

Inspired Writing ~1

Inspiration evolves
when I slow down and think
when I look up a word to find a
synonym, when I can't remember a
sound and don’t know the ‘just right’
words to describe it.

Inspiration evolves from
my experiences
my preferences
my abilities and
   the world I enjoy.

  Inspiration evolves when
  a marching band swings past
   with the scurl of bagpipes,
the steady beat of drums and
   the swing of kilts.

Inspiration evolves when
the colours and dress of
children and families,
lovers and friends
curl their way through
lawn, sidewalks and streets

Inspiration evolves when
I see children dancing and spinning to the grand music of Victoria Symphony, using their circles of light toys, as they would scarves, to swing through the air.

Inspiration evolves when
a lone multihued light sabre,
hidden behind a gigantic Douglas fir, conducts the Symphony floating on a barge in the Inner Harbour.

Inspiration evolves like a balloon
filling with air so that it floats
above the surface of the earth
to be seen, felt, and touched
until it goes higher than I can reach
but floats away and all I remember
is it’s beauty but not the words

A Natural City

The rhythm of the city
tuned to motored thrum and swish merges politely with matching thrum and swish of
fountains circling water in
the air settling over
squabbling ducks as
they pair to mate.

A different distant note of the ferry’s call counters the raucous cry of Great Blue herons nesting in tall Douglas fir trees, their wide winged swoop and swish as silent as a breeze in the trees.

Listening to this symphony ~
watching this opera
as I walk beneath spring green willows
is an added balm to my grateful soul.

The Music of Star Wars at Victoria Symphony

“Rest, laughter and music
return resiliency to my soul
stirring words of creative intent once more.”~ These words ending my post last evening encompassed how The Music of Star Wars affected my heart and soul. With friends, yesterday afternoon, I shared in the performance of this grand music by the Victoria Symphony. Playing to a full house the Victoria Symphony, with the Vox Humana Chamber Choir, entertained us with selections from the soaring music of the Star Wars movies, Star Trek, Battlestar Gallactica, Avatar and The Last Starfighter. The Victoria Symphony led by Conductor Sean O’Loughlin opened with the 20th Century Fanfare. A most appropriate way to introduce this glorious movie music. Vox Humana Chamber Choir, in select compostions, added another excellent layer to the music. It was so wonderful to listen to these marvellous scores with out the distraction of pictures and drama. Today I watched a part of one of the Star Wars movies and could not discern, as I did yesterday, the depth and breadth of this impressive music.

Turnabout ~ A Story

Turnabout

Thunderous applause, whistles and stamping of feet reverberated throughout Symphony Hall, the audience standing up as one even before the last notes had even been played. It definitely wasn’t the sort of music I preferred. A popular punk band named Steam Roller was in town and I was in the middle of it all. I had been given tickets to a ‘Musical Event' by a dear friend. Assuming that he knew my musical tastes I just accepted them. All he told me was the date, time and place. There were no red flags at all.

That evening, I dressed casually, and as my mother would say, I looked ‘dressy’. It was a warm summer evening so a stroll to the Symphony Hall was welcomed as I only lived a few blocks away. Approaching, I saw a few people gathering at the box office doors, others crossing at the lights to join them and more coming around the corner. There were a few gray heads to be seen, but others certainly didn’t look like the usual symphony crowd. Colourful hair do’s - lime green seemed a favourite - , long hair, short hair and ‘dread-locks’  (I think that’s what they’re called). Scanning the unusual crowd, there seemed to be an abundance of black t-shirts with silver, gold and red decals. I couldn’t make out what they were. As I got closer, I could see what might be faces and words. At first I had thought they were family members attending the performance, but when the numbers kept swelling, that idea was quite preposterous. A large black trailer was parked in front of the building showing enlarged faces, grinning at the world. I supposed it was a band of some kind.

Curious, I joined the throng and was about to pull my tickets out to inspect them when I heard my name being called. "Aunt Sophie! Aunt Sophie! I’m over here!” Looking around I saw my nephew, Anthony, waving and pushing through the lineup.  He was sporting a fairly ordinary buzz-cut, but was wearing a t-shirt with the same picture that was on the black trailer. Oh my goodness. What have I gotten myself into - and how!?

“Phew. I’m out of breath. Aunt Sophie, I was afraid I’d miss you. I just got in today and have been trying to contact you. Do you still have two tickets? Is anyone else joining you? Dad said he had given you two tickets.”

“Your dad? He didn’t give them to me. It was his neighbour that I go to symphony performances with sometimes. If this was your dad’s idea of a joke, he’s in for a very big surprise. Anthony, would you accompany your aunt to this ‘symphony’? And can you get me one of those t-shirts?”

“Not a problem. I would be honoured - but Aunt Sophie, do you know who you’re here to see?” His eyes were twinkling and he was barely able to keep from laughing. At the same time, he did sound concerned.

As Anthony was talking, I took the pins out of my hair, did a quick braid to the side and fastened it with the scrunchy that I kept in my purse. I pulled out my tickets and saw ‘Steam Roller - A Punk Band like no other! Fire and Brimstone!!’ Anthony was back with a t-shirt for me - “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“You can bet on it, Anthony. That brother of mine isn’t going to get any satisfaction from his little joke.”

The sweetish aroma of marijuana was heavy in the air. Everyone was butting out before being allowed into the Symphony Hall. Who knows what may have been in pockets and purses. Even so I was determined to see the evening through and enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it was incredibly loud music that I do not listen to and don’t plan to ever again. Once I got used to the light show and focussed on the band members, I could appreciate their musicality, professionalism and energy. They respected and interacted with their audience. I stood, cheered and clapped throughout the show, and especially as it drew to a close. I was truly one of the audience. As we were leaving the theatre, Anthony pulled me aside.

“Aunt Sophie, I’ve got us back stage passes. I know one of the guys. Do you want to?”

“Sure thing, I would love to meet them! Oh boy, my practical joking brother really misjudged this one. I guess I should be grateful to him for giving me this experience. Come on Anthony, lets go.”

Watching a Symphony Unfurl

The maestro’s face
lit up
toned down
calm
eyes closed
brows furrowed
hair flying
arms waltzing his hands
encouraging
inviting
clarinets
violins
french horns
kettle drums
piccolos
oboes
saxophones
cello
to harmonize in
cohesion
collaboration
in a symphony of passionate sound.

“To the sound itself the conductor adds the italics and
punctuation of gesture, of strained arms, of startling
tautness of the shoulders, of brisk nod, of hands
flung apart in some wild appeal to the universe.”
~ Christopher Andreae
