Released

Waves of emotion and energy

   surged and ebbed

as tides and pull of the moon

grow calmer

    and more steady

with the passage of years

    til waves lap gently

       at the shore.

Unfamiliar but released

 from pressured,

    working years.

A time to build and live anew

   with restored energy and

challenges of our own making.

“The will must be stronger than the skill.”

Cake

Photo taken in Victoria, December 2014
(I ate my slice of cake at Cozyhaus - sorry!)

I often long for cake

Chocolate

  Spice

    Carrot cake

      White cake if necessary

Icing not a requirement ~

but I’ll never turn it down

Today I gave myself a treat

Only because I hadn’t eaten yet

and I’d walked a long way

‘all sold out’ of rice bowls

forced me ~ yes forced me ~

to either just have tea or maybe,

just maybe a piece of cake?

When I saw a real piece of apple

   inside a maple cinnamon cake

with cream cheese frosting ~ two layers!

   There was no contest.

It was dense, moist and delicious ~

  a perfect accompaniment

    to my Peppermint Fog Tea.

And there is always cake.”

A Certain Grace

Evening is upon me when

the day’s fluff has settled,

books about writing studied,

writing projects worked on,

everything organized from

nutmeg to income tax papers,

clean sheets on my bed,

round of exercises done

I've taken care of my home.

with a certain grace.

At one time I would moan and groan

about boring housework.

Often do sometimes, a useless habit

but time and space for designing

how to care for my own home

has almost changed my perspective.

“There were times, indeed, when the vigor she put into her work was

more of a relief to her feelings that it was an ardor to efface dirt….”

The Chill of Winter

I knew it was coming

 ~ the chill of winter

snow lined bare, black branches

  left little doubt

~ yet graceful, elegant in

     cold foggy morning air.

What I wasn’t prepared for?

what do I wear outside today?

And where is everything?

  Do I wear snow boots?

It was all there…..in the closet

    ~ packed away last spring.

Bundled up, boots on ~ I walked

into the chill and damp of winter.

so that when you do it, it’s not all mixed up.”

Fine Threads

There is no grace to worry,

setting it back of mind

until a solution is found,

But a worry has fine threads

wrapped ‘round it

~ how do I know?

When the trouble spot,

like a stone in my shoe

has been fixed,

the threads break in relief,

the pesky stone is tossed away

That’s where grace is felt.

“What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile.”

~ George Henry Powell, songwriter

Dreams of the Dance

Music takes my mind away

while my heart slows,

my legs feel the dance.

I am Ginger Rogers

in a gown of

        gauze and sequins

on a moonlit patio

Gene Kelly leading me into a waltz.

Breathing deeply, I open my eyes.

My body still sways to the grace of dance.

“After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did.

She just did it backwards and in high heels.”

~ Ann Richards, retired politician, author

Author’s note: Ginger Rogers danced with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire

To Sense the Rhythm

To find the words

to sense the rhythm of life

is to slip away

from habits of a lifetime,

to sway to new melodies

in the moments

of each passing year

to sense the grace of our age.

“Sometimes when I am writing,

I am aware of a rhythm, a dance, a fury,

which is as yet empty of words.”

~ Stephen Spender, poet

Into Life

Set adrift in my own mind

it was time to stop,

settling gently to the ground,

much like Mary Poppins

with her umbrella.

The earth solid

    beneath my feet,

  purpose built from stillness

and I moved on into life.

“I’ll stay till the wind changes.”

Evening Air

Cool evening air

brushed my hair

caressed my face.

Promised rain hesitated

while I swept up

deep red crisp leaves.
