Celestial Hands of Time

Time slipped

 minute by minute

   the only thing visible

     the sun and the moon

~ celestial hands of

true time that watch

    over each day and night.

“My roses are my jewels;

the sun, moon and stars my clocks;

fruit and water my fare.”

~ Lady Hester Stanhope

24 Hours

You don’t need to run away

You don’t need to cry

Clouds will do that for you

 Their tears trickle down in

a fine mist or

       full fat drops

Wind blows them away

  Pushes them onto the next

prairie or woodland

       mountains or out to sea

the sun is allowed to shine

in skies clear and blue

or velvet black with

        star shine and crescent moon

You don’t need to run away.

You don’t need to cry.

“My courage does not depend on the weather.”

In the Early Evening

A crescent moon

A single star

a darkening sky

no cloud shadows

fore or aft

in the quiet

of early evening.

“In the morning there is meaning, in the evening there is feeling.”

~ Gertrude Stein, writer

We Know Only Breath

Comfort and space,

both needed

for breath to be easy.

In the space

of stars and moon

we know only breath.

The breath of the universe.

We have yet to discover

all the comforts of space.

“focus on the journey, not on arriving at a certain destination.”

The Race

Hurry into the morning as

if it would escape. The victim

of an everyday chase that ends

when afternoon comes. Chase

slows as sun lowers itself t’ward

the horizon and the shadow of

the racer crosses the finish line

Hurry into the night, out of breath and wanting sleep to come quickly so the race can begin again in the morning. And what use is

the hurry,

  the chase,

                 the race

when sun and moon don’t pay attention

to our funny little races through our lives.

“We have to slow the rhythm of our lives so that

the best of who we are can emerge.”

~ Lysa TerKeurst, author

Afternoon Moon

Look up!

When I walk

I stop to look to the sky

blue and decorated

with the lace of trees.

More intriguing is

a cloud white moon

riding high in the afternoon

shaded with dark moon craters

~ I greet this celestial body

with a smile, a nod and a click of my camera

and if shining silver when I turn out my light,

I’ll say ‘goodnight moon’.

with no science to prove

the steady, insistent pull

of the moon on earth

but I have felt and

seen those tides.

“It is a beautiful and delightful sight to behold the body of the moon.”

~ Galileo Galilei, astronomer

Moon Drift

clear azure sky

fades into black velvet

sifted with stars and moon drift.

“No sight is more provocative of awe than is the night sky.”

~ Llewelyn Powys, British essayist

Curved Things

I like curved things like the

arms of a rocking chair that

would mold my cupped hand

to fit; a curve that shapes the

moon as it passes through the

universe, the curve of the ear

of a coffee mug that is just big

enough for two or three fingers

on one hand, while the other

cups the warmth against

the first tea of the morning.

If life throws me a curve, I can

dash it against my anger and frustration

to leave me weak and vulnerable.

When my sky seems empty, I can cup

my hands and heart around it to feel

the ease of the rocking chair with

the warmth of fresh brewed tea.

“Cultivate your curves ~ they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided.”

~ Mae West

Imitation

Glitz and glamour sparkles

on bejewelled fingers and wrists,

flows down dresses in sequinned beauty

mere mimics of stars in the sky,

the froth of a waterfall and waves,

the glint of the sun on a still pond.

Whether manmade or of nature’s gifts,

glitz and glamour fades and disappears

yet returns when the moon polishes the lake, when rain glitters on leaves and flowers, when lightening flashes across the sky.

“The poetry of the earth is never dead.”

~ John Keats

Moon Songs

When the moon rises in the east, arcing over the sky til morning, the night sings a softer song

When the moon shadows its arc, the sky fills with stars, the night whispers whimsical songs.

From the darkness below

to look up to the night sky

is to be enchanted by the beauty.

“Go slowly, my lovely moon, go slowly.”

Into the Blue

Before sunshine brightens and

wind strokes trees and flowers

the full moon silvered the world

and shone through my window

lighting the page as I wrote ~

and nestled into the treetops

while the sky softened

into the blue.

“Go slowly, my lovely moon, go slowly.”

~ Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner
