Movie Review: Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins

Beginning in another dimension, a paradise of Greek mythology, Diana Prince, played by Gal Gadot, was born molded from clay by her mother, the Amazonian queen Hippolyta. She was the only child on an island created by the god Zeus for the race of Amazons, women of great athleticism, warrior prowess and beauty. She grew to love and be excited by the warrior skills - which her mother discouraged. Then Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, a World War One pilot fell through the barrier from that unknown dimension. His plane crashed in the ocean. Diana witnessed the crash and dove deep to save him. Their story builds and grows from this very strange meeting. Diana, with her shield and sword, returns with Steve to London on a mission to find and defeat Ares, played by David Thewlis. Steve, quite unsuccessfully tries to orient Diana to a life in grey London, the violence of World War ! and no gods or goddesses. Steve, a spy for the British, has a mission to get certain German intelligence to his superiors. Both of them have faith that their own realities and beliefs are correct. Faith in humanity and love is played out in this story. I was so pleased by the humour throughout this movie. The interplay between Chris Pine and Gal Gadot in their attempts at understanding each other’s reality got many laughs from all of us in the audience. But superheroes and war do require magic realism, sensational violence and ‘the good guys win’ so we were entertained superbly with bullets pinging off of shields, the Lasso of Truth and shiny arm protectors. It was just a good fun film.

“If you need to stop an asteroid, you call Superman.
If you need to solve a mystery, you call Batman.
But if you need to end a war, you call Wonder Woman.”
