Shifting

shifting sands

moving foot to foot

for balance’s sake

shifting winds

sudden or slow emotions

dates on the calendar

shifting tides

undercurrents

no warning

shifting perspectives

a subtle re-order

for strength in a moment.

“The map of what we call reality is an every-shifting mosaic of ideas.”

Muscles and Bones Included

Muscles and bones are included

when we arrive on this earth.

Muscles weak in their youth,

bones malleable and calcify as we grow.

Our job is to

work our muscles

in concert with

our skeletons to allow us

to breathe

to walk,

to run,

to dance,

to smile

to hold a cup of tea

to hop, skip and jump

to carry our books to and from school,

to play hop scotch or kick the can,

to eat or drink when its time

to skate

to lift weights, or knead bread,

to crochet

to do fine needle work

and anything else we even try to do

to curl up and sleep, stretching, tossing and turning.

We work them with each waking minute

~ so much so that they are just there.

Brush Strokes

A high and mighty wind

A broad blue canvas set higher

A palette of cloud set between

gifted a busied weekday

with strokes of genius

Lifting my sight to the sky

I felt my heart and soul expand.

“On the canvas of life,

Every sweep of the brush matters,

Counts for something…"

Fish or Flowers

When the order of things is

1 ~ 2 ~ 3 ~

and so on….

but the time of things

does not match the order,

how to make sense of it all

just do what needs doing

ignore #2 to answer

the phone when it rings,

accept a sudden appointment

because

it has been too long a wait,

push #3 aside to make room

for the laundry

from the dryer,

put #1 to the back of

the order of things.

It is not my order but an order

I have yet to envision ~

my fingers, my feet and my heart

seem to know differently.

“Deep in human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe

that makes sense, But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”

~Frank Herbert, Dune

Relief on a Spring Day

Glistening ice on

curbs and sidewalks

crumbling snow against

curbs…..and sidewalks

run off crossing corners

drains hidden beneath ice pack

sun warm and bright ~

relief on a spring day.

of seasons; it’s a rebirth of the spirit”

Discussion

Maybe not or maybe so

a decision hard to make

when opinions from all sides

push like gentle pins

until I feel like closing

my eyes and ears when

discussion has swept

sanity and civility from the table

The moral of this story is to

keep quiet, step back and

just decide

according to what’s right.

“I’d rather lose an argument than get into

a long discussion in order to win it.”

~ Rafael Nadal, tennis player

The Whole Show

Damn! I missed the Oscars.

Entertainers entertaining us

and themselves. More than

that they are honouring each

other past and present. The

glittering gowns and colourful

ensembles are attractions,

but it pleases me to hear the tributes, and gratitude poured out lavishly. Not just for the actors that work to entertain us all, but the people behind the cameras, lights and costuming;

directing, cinematography, set design, writers and musical scores; Honoured as well are those that have passed in

the previous year from all departments

behind the making of films throughout their careers.

The dark threads of cynicism and politics

weave its way through the glitter and gratitude.

A bitter sweet part of the whole show.

“We must find time to stop and thank the

people who make a difference to our lives.”

~ John F. Kennedy
