View of the Qu'appelle Valley taken Summer of 2011 |
Sitting in warm back yard Qu’appelle Valley sunshine
A '60‘s tune drifts through an open window
Motor boat passes with purposeful unhurried drone
Bird song brackets man-made sounds - wood chopping, cars passing, children playing
Warm sun rests easily on my reclining form
Legs and arms bare, exposed to golden rays
Voices echo on the lake
Sound and sight of man and nature blend
in the warmth and gentleness of the day
Peace and serenity settle around me
Afternoon......
Chair unchanged
Bathing suit dries in the warming sun
Surrounding trees wear the shady droop of afternoon
News report replaces the '60’s music
Boat and droning motor now distant
Birdsong still brackets the day with
intermittent hum of local traffic
Wind chimes sing on the breeze.
Then....
A new sound intrudes....
The whine of a motor, steady and certain of its task,
fills any remaining space in the air
Faint pungency, lacking any floral bouquet,
is carried on the breeze that moves the wind chimes.
Emptiness is left as the whining winds down,
tires spit gravel as the truck departs.
Peace and serenity return.
“A vacation is having nothing to do
and all day to do it in”
