Science shaves beauty thinly
dividing hoar frost and rime frost.
Hoar frost clings delicately
until wind and sun cause its release.
Rime frost willfully hangs on
whether winds blow or sun shines.
Science, come lately, has forgotten that
both decorate the world in winter white lace.
“It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost,
the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it.”
~ John Burroughs
