The Boss of Me

Arguments seldom win anything 

especially arguments that

run amok through a person’s mind. 

All that mind chatter has 

the faces and voices from 

the distant past ~ 

everyone living rent free 

at my beck and call  ~ 

until I give them 

eviction notices

Time passes quietly but they wait 

patiently for a so called ‘bad' day 

to nail down squatters rights.

With each ‘eviction notice’ 

their voices lose strength until 

I accept 

that it really is my own voice 

repeating these old messages. 

Then I know I really am 

the boss of me.
