Dreams of the Dance

Music takes my mind away

while my heart slows,

my legs feel the dance.

I am Ginger Rogers

in a gown of

        gauze and sequins

on a moonlit patio

Gene Kelly leading me into a waltz.

Breathing deeply, I open my eyes.

My body still sways to the grace of dance.

“After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did.

She just did it backwards and in high heels.”

~ Ann Richards, retired politician, author

Author’s note: Ginger Rogers danced with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire
